Chronicles of Learn-a-Lot #11 - We're Ba-ack!

The miserable winter months have come and gone, and we enter a brand new year of Romulus' Camp Learn-a-Lot summer school program at Wick Elementary. The children will not enter the classrooms until Monday July 21st, however the student tutors and summer teachers are hard at work to ensure a successful program.

The student tutors from Romulus High School are being educated on what exactly our goals are for these 20 days at Camp

Learn-a-Lot, and how to accomplish them most effectively. The camp's teachers are being taught how to set up a classroom, and how to arrange their lesson plans for the year.

Throughout the upcoming summer school year, the students will learn "Sight-Words" by Dolch. This
is a test where the students will be shown a series of words, and be asked to recognize them when they are pointed at. As the Camp progresses, it is expected that the student's reading accuracy will increase-- allowing the students to add many new words to their repertoire and hopefully their vocabulary.

This year's camp theme is superheroes, with a focus on Robotics and Simple Machines. The students will learn how these mechanical machinations come to be, what they are made of, and even make a few creations themselves.

The summer program is run by Miss Julie Wadsworth and Miss Brigette Johnson, under the care of the principal of Wick Elementary: Miss Shavonna Johnson.

In the upcoming weeks Camp Learn-a-Lot are making trips to the Hands on Museum, Turtle Cove Water-park, the Detroit Science Center, and more. There is nothing but fun and excitement from here on out, and once again, I am here to document these events through photos and weekly updates. Stay Tuned.
